This new addition to UN’s Maxi Marine Diver Collection comes in a comparatively small 42.7 mm round case made of stainless steel.While most “black” watches usually made using a process called PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), which is prone to occasional bumps and scratches, the Monaco YS Maxi Marine Diver gets its shiny black color thanks to DLC (Diamond-Like-Carbon) treatment. The thin film of carbon on the steel case is so strong you can’t scratch it with anything, but a real diamond.Well, of course, you can also hit it with a hummer, if there is an emergency.Just like a great number of recently unveiled Black-on-Black models, the watch features a dark grey luminous substance generously applied to its indexes and hour and minute hands made of 18-carat rose gold. The same material was employed to make indexes and numerals for the traditional diving scale.The watch also sports a number of ceramic elements, including the crown, folding clasp and their trademark inserts in the rubber strap.Just like the aforementioned Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Titanium chronometer, the YS Maxi Marine Diver is powered by the UN-26 caliber, which is based on the good old ETA 2892 automatic movement.I couldn’t find any info regarding the watch’s price, but I guess it is going to be around $20,000.

I am not a fan of luxury cell phones. Watchmakers seem to think that there is money to be made by combining watch technology and appeal with cell phones. Tag Heuer did it and now Ulysse Nardin will unveil the Chairman Phone at the BaselWorld 2009.The problem with luxury wrapped electronics is that it ages very quickly. A mechanical watch is never getting outdated. A mobile phone is obsolete latest in 18 months.In any case the Ulysse Nardin Chairman looks dramatic and it features kinetic power along other elements of luxury watches. Details are still very limited as Ulysse Nardin is keeping it under wraps until BaselWorld 2009 next week.More details on the Chairman site.
