ICAP Leopard finished third at the 2009 Rolex Hobart Sydney Race and the winner of the regatta was Alfa Romeo and the second in position was Wild Oats XI. ICAP Leopard is the 100 feet British super-maxi racing yacht which is owned by Helical Bar PLC chief executive Mike Slade. ICAP Leopard achieved the third position after a long and hard-fought battle with the last year's winner Wild Oats XI and this time winner Alfa Romeo. Crawling up the Derwent River with the 100 feet British super-maxing was tough for the crew as weather was changing each hour. The crew really tried hard but missed the second position also. The Rolex Hobart Sydney Race is all about testing the calibre to withstand the torturous weather conditions and emerging as a leader irrespective of what the conditions are. Still till now no team could break the record created by Wild Oats XI, though Alfa Romeo won but they did not defeat the old record set by Wild Oats XI. ICAP Leopard crossed the Tasmanian finish line after two day, sixteen hours and forty-fives minutes at sea. The windy weather was a little help to the sailors but the desire of winning was higher which made the crew stand against the worse weather conditions also. The Rolex Hobart Sydney Race is known for its fearsome weather conditions which makes this competition a very interesting competition to view. But this year the weather conditions were very hard-pressed which did not give tacticians and navigators any advantage to puff of the breeze and make this competition a neck-to-neck fight. The winds were cold and blustery for the race which made the race even harder to win. With such torturous weather conditions ICAP Leopard gave a hard-fight to Alfa Romeo. The forecasts changed hourly since the very start and no one could predict the weather till the very finish of the race. This race brought an immense tactical battle between all the super-maxi yachts. It is disappointing to know that ICAP Leopard could not take the line honour title also but Alfa Romeo should be credited for taking a lead in the impeccable race.ICAP Leopard has missed the historic treble as it has already won the Rolex Fastnet and Middle-Sea races earlier in the season. If ICAP Leopard had won this race then the team would have all three "offshore classic" in the season. The effort put by the team was tremendous which gave then the third position. The Rolex Hobart Sydney Race is about fight the odd and becoming a winner. Rolex is associated with this race as that it can bring the best sports team in front of the world. This time the best sports team was Alfa Romeo but ICAP Leopard gave a good fight to this team also.

I'm hoping to make one large watch purchase in 2007, and I'm trying to decide if it's going to be an Omega, a Breitling, or the Submariner. And if I do go with the Submariner, should I try to pick up the commemorative 50th anniversary model? While doing some research on the "Kermit", I came across some interesting Submariner history:Rolex introduced the very first waterproof watch in 1929 called the Oyster.Rolex started development on the Submariner in 1952, and the first model was introduced in 1953.While the Submariner was being developed, a prototype was subjected to 132 dives up to depths of 60 meters over 5 months, and came through it all perfectly.The Submariner was the first watch in the world to have a rotating bezel.The luminous triangle at the 12 o'clock position was initially intended to be red, however red is the first wavelength to be lost underwater, so testers asked that it be made white instead.The codename for the Submariner while under development was Frogman. Other names that were considered were the Deep-Sea Special (isn't that a dish at Red Lobster?) and the Nautilus.Initially waterproof to 100 meters, the depth rating was increased to 200 meters in 1954, then 300 meters in 1979.The first Submariner with a date complication was launched in 1969, along with the first gold model.In 1979, the plexiglas crystal was replaced with the nearly scratch-proof synthetic sapphire crystal still used today.In 2003, Rolex released the 50-year commemorative model with a unique green bezel and a redesigned dial.I should note that the change in the anniversary model's dial is not to be taken lightly as Rolex puts an immense amount of consideration into their designs (which is why they are so classic and widely replicated). The anniversary Submariner has what is referred to as the maxi-dial which means that the hour markers are larger, and the minute hand is slightly wider (making it more visible, especially in the dark since it holds more luminescent paint). It is speculated that other Oyster Professional Rolex models (the GMT Master II, Explorer II, and the Sea-Dweller) will adopt the maxi-dial which seems to have been pioneered by the Yacht-Master.By Christian Cantrell
