Roger Dubuis Excalibur Self-Winding with Micro-Rotor and Flying Tourbillon (Ref. EX45-520-20-00/0ER01/B)Presented this January at SIHH 2011 trade show, the new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Self-Winding with Micro-Rotor and Flying Tourbillon Limited Edition (Ref. EX45-520-20-00/0ER01/B) automatic watch sports a dial layout, which is ideologically similar to that of the gorgeous Piaget Emperador Coussin Tourbillon Ultra-Thin automatic timekeeper also presented earlier this year.As you can see on the photo below, the new watch comes with two sub-dials that animate its face.The first one –a flying tourbillon carriage at 7 o’clock– looks quite familiar and even somewhat pestered. The second one –a skeletonized micro-rotor at 11 o’clock– still looks very fresh and quite inviting. Thankfully, there are still very few watches on the market that show this simple, yet very entertaining complication.The function comes courtesy of the Calibre RD520 automatic movement that was announced at SIHH 2010, but officially presented only last fall when the company introduced its Roger Dubuis Excalibur Automatic Tourbillon watch in rose gold.Being quite large (the movement measures 33.84 mm in diameter and is 6.50 mm thick,) the movement requires a formidable casing, so the watch is offered in a large body 45 mm in diameter, which is equipped with the signature indented bezel and a pair of triple-horn lugs that are also characteristic of the Excalibur range.The rose gold version of the watch that was also limited to only 88 pieces, was offered at a somewhat disturbing price of $160,000, so, I suppose, this model will also be quite expensive.

These limited edition timepieces will utilise a new English co-axial calibre created by Dr. Daniels and will be executed by Roger Smith using combined workshop facilities, making them direct extensions of this great horological master's creative concepts.The Daniels name is well known to watch collectors and serious connoisseurs of horology everywhere as a legendary pioneer. In the 1970's his single-handed revival of the hand made mechanical watch, at a time when quartz watches were de rigueur, was historic. Even in the 21st century, with the advent and popularity of large numbers of mechanical, mass-produced watches, his ideas and standpoints are as poignant and applicable as ever.Adding to this already exceptional background, he is the author and co-author of several major horological treatises, creator of a series of unique pocket and wristwatch designs and inventor of the first truly new watch escapement of the 20th century. Without question, Daniels' horological efforts encompass several lifetimes of achievement. Recognised as a master watchmaker, he has been awarded a C.B.E. in the 2010 Queen's New Year's Honours list for his services to horology.The collaboration between these two men is a natural one, due to the fact that Roger Smith was the only apprentice of George Daniels. Already long established as an independent watchmaker of renown in the same tradition as Dr. Daniels, Roger Smith is able to understand the concepts, principles and designs of Daniels' visionary creations like no other, having studied and worked with him closely through the course of many years on the Isle of Man. It is for this reason that George Daniels is pleased to entrust the execution of his designs and ideas for this new series of watches to the Roger W. Smith workshop.
