I got to check out this handsome new timepiece from Ebel a few months back and now they are formally introducing it to the world. Given the return to basics and classicism this year in the luxury watch industry, Ebel has taken the best of the their past and present and created a timeless look for the Classic Hexagon 41mm Large Date watch. The big date complication really makes the piece – that and Ebel’s signature monohull case that is made out of one piece of swoopy steel. It is 41mm wide – that makes it medium sized, and relatively thin at 10mm thick. The entire movement and dial is placed through the dial of the watch. The rear of the watch is curved and quite comfy. Ebel has always done a good job with playing with polish. The case is mostly satin finished with the bezel and screws done with a mirror finish. The hands and applied hour markers are polished as well for a handsome, legible look.With a tight integration of the textured leather strap, the watch fits very securely on the wrist. The dial is available in black or galvanic silver. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2896 automatic movement. This isn’t the only classic styled big date watch this year, but is a good contender for your buying dollars.

If I was not supposed to be writing a article about a particular brand of watch here, I would be tempted to change the title to “It’s About Time”. Mind you, that might be a bit misleading. After all, loads of people from all walks of life say that “time is your most valuable resource”; and not just because “life is short”.But there seems to be something about people that makes them particularly proud of their timepiece specimens. The British Parlament gathers at Westminster, which also “just happens to be” the home of Big Ben (which is, of course, no casual name). The Swiss are famous for their ornately carved cuckoo clocks. And I learned from nothing other than a freebie that came with a men’s magazine, that about the only reason to visit Honduras, is to see the oldest clock in the world, housed in the cathedral at Comayagua, made over 800 years ago by the Moors and donated to the town by King Phillip of Spain.This fetichistic state of enamouredness about the things that we tell the time with, manifests itself every bit as much in watches and mobile clocks as it does in clocks that are, quite simply, too big to be portable. The truth is that the fad seems farther than ever from dying out in the present moment; judging by the fact that there exist watches that are especially for women or especially for men. And just when you thought watchmakers could not get any more ostentatious than including day and date trackers and hour, minute and second counters in their wondrous things that they create, people release on the market watches embedded with diamonds; those rare minerals that are so expensive that most people will never be able to purchase and flaunt them (diamond theft is certainly common, but that is another story). How else to explain the birth of the Ebel Beluga Womens Steel Diamond Watch?When reading the official description of the product in question, I become even more gobsmacked and perplexed; for it is listed as being “especially for the woman who treats her watch as jewelry”. The likeliness of the company’s clientele being mostly not only rich but also vain, aside (and yes, I understand fully well that this is not the place to elaborate extensively on social issues and paraphernalia), the device has a 30m depth water resistance factor, and it comes with a precise Swiss Quartz movement. It is also described as “gorgeous”, thanks to its traditional mother-of-white pearl sunburst and silver hands.
