Ah, I love my Concord ladies watch. Whenever I wear it, I think of Concord, Massachusetts, one of my favorite places to visit.It's such a quaint little town that's seeped in American history and literature. Writer of two of my favorite books, “The Scarlett Letter” and “The House of Seven Gables”, Hawthorne, with his wife, rented the gorgeous cottage, The Old Manse, for $100 a year, back in 1842.The young Louisa May Alcott, of “Little Women” fame, lived with her family in another historic house, The Wayside. 13-year-old Louisa May had her own bedroom; in 1846, she wrote in her journal that she enjoyed being alone in her room, and that her mother had made it very pretty.Another Concord native was David Henry Thoreau, a poet, naturalist, philosopher, writer, historian, and everything in between. His brilliant essay, “Civil Disobedience”, urges readers to be cautions of governments, as they can do much to stifle individuality.Next time you wear your Concord mariner watch, think of Hawthorne, Alcott and Thoreau, and of all the creativity and revolution that the humble town of Concord inspired.
