G-Shock watches from Casio could get more environmentally-friendly in the future thanks to solar technology.The brand unveiled a new version of the Oceanus this month in Japan that has the solar panel right behind the face, which is as rugged as you might expect from a G-Shock.However, this is also an advantage when it comes to battery life, as Casio claims that only 6.2 watts of renewable power is needed to create up to 860,000 movements.Fans and timepiece aficionados were treated to a 'blown apart' view of the new model so they could see every aspect of its makeup and more manufacturers may soon start offering solar panels too in order to keep pace with Casio."Will solar-powered watches become increasingly popular over battery-powered and kinetic-powered watches?" asks UnerGizmo.com.Although this is the first solar-powered G-Shock, Casio fans can already get hold of other models for men incorporating the technology, including the Pro Trek Radio Controlled Tough Solar Watch.This features Wave Ceptor technology so it can also track lap times to the second.

Water-resistant Casio watches should not be considered as niche products, the company has insisted.According to Sue Vandershans, creative director at Casio America, a waterproof watch can come in handy in many different situations."Most people today encounter some water in their daily routine, even if it's just sitting at a lunch table when someone knocks over a jug of water," she commented.Speaking to CANOE, she said this is just one example of how a waterproof watch can be a useful and necessary item to have.Ms Vandershans noted that Casio has been producing water-resistant watches for almost three decades.The G-Shock watch was the first product of its kind to be rolled out by the manufacturer some 27 years ago.Ms Vandershans added that a waterproof watch should be able to withstand any of the unfortunate accidents that "life throws at you".This comes after the Japan Times noted that the Casio is emulating many of the features of its G-Shock watches in its other products, such as its new CA005 mobile phone.
