Lange & Sohne, arguably one of the best watchmakers in the world, has a number of amazing models, however, most are out of reach for the average watch enthusiast, at well over thirty grand each. Including one of my personal favorites, the Datograph, which is $40k and up. Fortunately, the Saxony Grand Automatik is an exception, retailing at $22,900, and available for less if you shop around or negotiate a discount. I found one for $16,999, brand new in either 18K white gold or red gold. To me, having a Lange in steel would be amazing, but this is almost unheard of for the most recognized German watch brand. So if the cheapest you can find a Lange is this, and it is a solid gold case, well then that is not too bad of a compromise I guess.The case is available in 18K white or red gold. For a dressy watch, the 40 mm diameter by 8.2 mm thickness, is perfect for me, and would go great with a suit or nice dress shirt. Like many Lange watches, the movement is hand finished, to the absolute highest standard in the industry, and is visible through a clear sapphire caseback. It is manual wind, meaning there is no rotor blocking the view of the beautiful German silver and hand finished perfection. It features an in-house movement, of course, the Lange Calibre L921.2 SAX-0-MAT specifically. It oscillates at 21,600vph and has 36 jewels. The movement consists of over 307 parts and features a power reserve of 46 hours. It comes is four variations (two in white and two in red gold). Every two years a weekly German business magazine called Wirtschaftswoche puts together an annual ranking of Germany's top luxury brands. This year, A. Lange & Sohne has once again risen above the rest to capture the top spot on this prestigious list as the best luxury brand in Germany, scoring 242 points out of a possible 300. This is the second time in a row for A.lange and Sohne. It should be noted that to be the requirement to be considered for the list the company could be for any luxury item, not just for timepieces. Beating out other popular and highly recognizable brands including some impressive automobile makers - Maybach, Mercedes Benz, and Porsche. fashion designers, and other companies. Such factors as their high score for brand appeal pushed the A. Lange & Sohne brand to the top of the list after data was collected by interviewing more than 150 experts from the respective industries. Beginning in 2005, the luxury league table is drawn up every two years by the Munich based brand rating agency at the instigation of the Wirtschaftswoche magazine among the leading German luxury brands.
